File System Wars

So, as you can see from my previous post, I’ve been tinkering with my computer and website. After reading over this File System Comparison chart on Wikipedia, I began to realize that in the future, way after the Operating System Wars of today (XP vs OsX), the main battles will be in regards to File Systems. Because, at the end of the day, it’ll be less about the tool you use to access data and more about the system that contains the data.

On a similar note, the other day I was wondering what Filing System I should use on my network hard-drive. My options for an Xp and OsX enviroment were between Fat32 (Microsoft, 1996) and HFS+ (Apple Computers, 1998). While I didn’t mind Fat32, I later realized that XP has no problem working with HFS+ drive. And since my XP machines are the minority in my studio, I chose HFS+.The wildest difference I encountered when compairing the systems was that Fat32 max file size is 4GB, while HFS+ was 16EB. What’s an Exabyte? A quintrillion bytes = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes = 1018 bytes = 1 Billion GBs. That’s what I call super future proof!!!

Any bets on who will be the first company to create a file system with max length of a Yottabyte?
